Founder Jim Mellody was a transplanted Pennsylvanian who tried a steakhouse, but when that didn't work, he added his mother's maiden name to the word "Beef" on the sign and watched business take off.     When the temperature of bay water falls below 68 degrees Fahrenheit, come see hundreds of manatees in their natural habitat from manatee observation platforms at the Manatee Viewing Center. There is also a tidal walkway that takes visitors deep into a mangrove habitat. Additionally, visitors can experience the manatee museum and watch films about the manatee. The center has a gift shop and café as well. Open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. daily through April 15. Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and Easter. Closes at 3 p.m. Christmas Eve.
