Restaurants:

  • Fleming's Prime Steakhouse

    Cuisine: Steak house
    Features: Date night, Upscale

International Plaza District: 4322 W Boy Scout Blvd., Tampa, 33607

Outback cooked up a higher class venue here with first-rate trimmings. Sharp staff, smart wines, a broad menu and expansive hospitality, updated beyond showoff beef-offs. Fine steak in prime comfort starts with onion soup.

  • Bar Louie

Cuisine: American casual, Breakfast or brunch
Features: Children's menu, Late-night dining, Martini, Upscale

International Plaza District: 2223 N West Shore Blvd., Tampa, 33607

This IP hot spot is more bar than restaurant. It offers $1 burgers on Tuesday nights. Also, there are tater tots. Napoleon Dynamite would approve. The '80s soundtrack is a guilty pleasure, especially delicious when taken concurrently with a couple of the 40 beers on tap. The vibe is all funky artwork, echoey urban-industrial interior.

The bar scene: Bar Louie is the middleman at the IP. It's not too shabby and you don't have to get decked out; just be casual. Don't let the casual atmosphere fool you, though. You'll still pay $10 for a martini. But Bar Louie offers a selection of drafts, bottled beers, microbrews and more than 20 wines by the glass. The surroundings are warm with a contemporary, urban feel, and the floor is spotted with high-top and regular tables as well as booths and a large bar. There's a lot to be found here from lunch to 2 a.m. and the professionals of Tampa, young and old, seem to love it.

  • Ocean Prime

Cuisine: American upscale, Fine dining, Seafood upscale
Features: Date night, Happy hour, Live music, Upscale

International Plaza District: 2205 N West Shore Blvd., Tampa, 33607

This new high-end steakhouse may not seem like the most prudent choice in this economy, in this restaurant climate, even in this steak house-choked town. But it’s fabulous, with a la carte prime meats and fresh fish cooked at 1,200 degrees and served simply. Many of the sides are stunning versions of classics: potato gratin gets an uplifting jalapeno smolder; spinach is lush with cream and smoky bacon. The ninth restaurant concept of Columbus, Ohio, entrepreneur Cameron Mitchell looks like the dining room of a stately old cruise ship: porthole windows and gleaming wooden paneling, huge amber-lit chandeliers that you can imagine swaying a little with the waves. The dining room staff, clad in white servers' jackets (also very cruise ship) are exceptional, whisking in and out to crumb a table or refill a glass.

  • Pelagia Trattoria

    Cuisine: Italian, Mediterranean
Features: Outdoor seating, Private room, Upscale

International Plaza District: 4200 Jim Walter Blvd., Tampa, 33607

Located in the Renaissance Tampa Hotel at International Plaza, the restaurant has an Italianesque menu that starts in Spain and coasts the entire Mediterranean for lusty flavors, scallops and bean ragout, Manchego cheese and honeycomb, crunchy olives and artichoke ricotta flan. Panettone French toast for breakfast.

  • Roy's

Cuisine: Asian, Fine dining, Seafood upscale
Features: Date night, Happy hour, Private room, Prix Fixe menu, Upscale

International Plaza District: 4342 W Boy Scout Blvd., Tampa, 33607

It's hard to resent chain restaurants when Outback can bring a chef like Roy Yamaguchi and his jeweled fusion of French polish and Asian flavors to our table. Love rack of lamb or Hawaiian fish? Roy's local partners do them up teak-brown, with orchids, breezy guitars and a happy crowd of casual big-spenders. Eat at the bar for clever sushi (or dinner) and get a bonus closeup of a smart kitchen crew. Aloha service, too.

  • Grape at International Plaza

    Cuisine: Bistro, Tapas/small plates
    Features: Date night, Live music

International Plaza District: 2223 N West Shore Blvd., Tampa, 33607

Cool purple club chairs invite lengthy investigation of the more than 120 wines available by the bottle, glass or half glass, divided into categories by the relative "weight" or body of the wines. Goofy descriptions and lack of vintage years make the list a little frustrating for the serious oenophile, but a menu of cheeses, pates and spreads marries nicely with the quaffs.

  • Bilmar Station

    Cuisine: American casual
    Features: Big-screen TVs, Kid-friendly, Sports

International Plaza District: 8501 Buccaneer Square, Tampa, 33615

Bilmar Station offers what's expected out of a sports bar and goes beyond with a comfortable atmosphere and full bar.

  • Blue Martini

    Cuisine: Tapas/small plates
Features: Live music, Martini, tbt* Top Bar, Upscale

International Plaza District: 2223 N West Shore Blvd., Tampa, 33607

Blue Martini calls its fare heavy appetizers, but there's not a chicken wing or onion ring in sight. Instead, the short menu features contemporary Asian-Mediterranean fusion: sesame-seared tuna, sliced beef tenderloin, hummus, calamari salad. And don't miss the killer 6-inch-tall chocolate cake. The bar scene: Blue Martini is definitely one of the slicker martini chains out there; so much so that it even has an outpost in Vegas. Ick. But there's no denying this lounge at International Plaza is one of Tampa's most popular meet markets, both at happy hour and late on weekends. You might bump into some pretty big-name athletes there. And if you like jazz or R&B, the Blue is definitely for you.
