  • Jade Bistro

    Editor's pick

    Cuisine: Asian, Bistro, Vietnamese
    Features: Catering, Kid-friendly, Takeout

Pinellas Park: 6139 Park Blvd., Pinellas Park, 33781

Almost all the dishes at Kim Luu's restaurant have that heady Vietnamese alchemy of sweet balancing salty or spicy, crunchy pitted against plush. Luu opened little space as An Ngon, but even regulars had a hard time pronouncing it. An is Vietnamese for "taste" and ngon means "delicious." Bingo. But maybe Jade Bistro rests in the memory banks better. And it should: Prices are extremely reasonable, service is charming and solicitous, decor is simple but cheerily tidy. The menu dips into other Asian cuisines, a few dishes from China, a couple from Malaysia, and a sushi menu they're still tinkering with. Even these other cuisines benefit from the Vietnamese affection for fresh herbs, lime and nuoc cham dipping sauce, which stamp dishes with their own distinctive panache.

  • Ben Thanh Restaurant

    Editor's pick

    Cuisine: Asian, Vietnamese
    Features: Takeout

    Pinellas Park: 4200 62nd Ave. N, Pinellas Park, 33781

Ben Thanh is the biggest market in Ho Chi Minh City, a beloved institution that over centuries has been destroyed, relocated, reborn and renovated. Pinellas Park's Ben Thanh is a little like that. The Vietnamese restaurant opened in 1994 on 34th Street N, but closed in 2002 when chef/owner Susan Nguyen's husband had a stroke. Ben Thanh has returned, popping up on 62nd Avenue N in an unassuming strip mall. It's a short menu with a refined array of soups pho and egg noodle, vermicelli bowls, soothing porridges, stir-fries and complicated self-roll entrees. Ben Thanh does an admirable job with the familiar, the magical spicy-soothing properties of rare beef pho, or tiny fried eggrolls on a bed of cold vermicelli kicked up with nuoc cham.

  • Senor Taco

    Cuisine: Mexican

Pinellas Park: 6447 Park Blvd., Pinellas Park, 33781

There may not be many things more simple than a taco, but the housemade soft corn tortillas are good enough to make you drive past the drive-through. Owner Carlos Sosa fills them with a number of traditional meats, and is most proud of his slow-roasted pork shoulder, cochinita pibil. Another favorite: the spicy chorizo sausage. The meats are also available in burritos and as tortas (sandwiches). Lunch and dinner.

    Pinellas Park: 12333 66th St. N, Pinellas Park, 33773

It might be Pinellas County's version of the Dallas Bull -- without the diversity of the Bull. Make no mistake about it. This is a country bar pure and pure, though wearing a hat is optional (we think). This bar attracts a bit of an older crowd (as in 30s) and has a 2,500-square-foot dance floor that's wall-to-wall line dancing most nights.
