Big-name comics hit Tampa Bay area this week

A handful of big-name comics have gigs in the Tampa Bay area this week, so depending on your mood we have some funny people to amuse you. If you are feeling...

Gossipy ...

Then Kathy Griffin at Ruth Eckerd Hall is your comic of choice Saturday night at 8 ($52.50-$100). This will be her eighth stop at Ruth Eckerd Hall. We know the chatty gossip comic loves HSN, so this is like coming home to mecca. (727) 791-7400.

Like a frat boy ...

Then the dude-centric humor of Pauly Shore at the Improv Friday through Sunday or worse, Jamie Kennedy of Malibu's Most Wanted fame, will be at Side Splitters in Carrollwood today through Saturday. Kennedy is so loathed by some comedy fans that he did a whole documentary, Heckler, on confronting his haters; $20-$27 at (813) 960-1197. But Shore has gone from his '90s MTV "Weasel" persona to helming his own independent films and touring as a standup. $22 at (813) 864-4000.

That improvised comedy is art ...

Then the Sarasota Improv Festival on Friday and Saturday at the Florida Studio Theatre is for you. This annual high-energy event is bringing acts from around the country, including Available Cupholders, hailing from Atlanta, and ImprovBoston. With long-form comedy, short sketches, traditional improv games and even improv workshops taught by the professionals attending the festival. Tickets range from $10 to $59 for a weekend pass that includes 10 shows and a special event: the Improvised Shakespeare Company. See; (941) 366-9000.
