Oscar winner Mo'Nique brings standup show

It's not every day an Oscar-winning comedian comes to town. Not that Mo'Nique was funny at all when she nabbed an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for portraying an abusive mother in 2009's Precious. Still, she has never strayed too far from her comedy roots. She is perhaps best known for her role as Nikki Parker in the UPN series The Parkers, and she hosted The Mo'Nique Show, a late-night talk show that ran for a couple of years on BET until it was canceled in 2011. This weekend she brings her standup show at 8 and 10:30 p.m. Friday and 7:30 and 10 p.m. Saturday to the Improv Comedy Theater, 1600 E Eighth Ave., Tampa. $40. (813) 864-4000. improvtampa.com.
