Cool off at the Cool Art Show, fruit is muse at Mize and gain insight at the TMA

DON’T SWEAT IT: COOL ART SHOW

The Cool Art Show, always held in the middle of summer, always in the sweet, sweet air conditioning of the Coliseum, is a fine St. Petersburg tradition. Sponsored by the Professional Association of Visual Artists, the show returns Saturday-Sunday, with a broad range of artists working in fine art media, including paintings and photography, and fine craft, including jewelry, metal, glass and ceramics. I like that the show always offers work for different tastes, from the very traditional to the contemporary, like Calan Ree’s ethereal ceramic sculptures, pictured. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. both days. Admission and parking are free. 535 Fourth Ave. N. pava-artists.org.

RIPE FOR THE PICKING: FRUIT BOWL

Fruit as muse makes for a great summer show, and people get obsessed with images of fruit, right? Find your favorite at Fruit Bowl, opening Friday at Mize. Thirty local and national artists each interpreted a different fruit, so it will be fun to see what they’ve come up with. I’m partial to pineapples, so I especially like Coralette Damme’s patterned print, shown. The opening reception is 6-10 p.m. at 689 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St. N, St. Petersburg. The show runs through Aug. 11. chadmize.com.

CURATOR’S LECTURE: VAPOR AND VIBRATION

"Vapor and Vibration: The Art of Larry Bell and Jesús Rafael Soto," currently on display at the Tampa Museum of Art, brings the groundbreaking artists together in an exhibition that explores light and space. Bell was known for his vapor drawings and glass cubes, while Soto often worked in Plexiglas to achieve optical illusions in his kinetic sculptures. If you haven’t seen the show yet, Sunday would be a great time to go. Joanna Robotham, curator of modern and contemporary art, will be giving a lecture on the significance of the artists and the evolution of their work. It’s at 2 p.m., with a reception at 1:30. $5. Registration is strongly encouraged at tampamuseum.org.
