Take a tour of ceramic art, discover books as an art form and see work by PAVA members

Pottery Party: Tampa Bay Tour de Clay

Tampa Bay is rich with a close knit community of ceramic artists. Our area has a wonderful history of supporting this art form, as evidenced by the Tampa Bay Tour de Clay celebrating its 10th anniversary this weekend. The tour visits five studios in Pinellas, Hillsborough and Pasco counties, with each main studio hosting artists from around the state. There’s a broad scope of styles and techniques represented, including Matt Schiemann’s wood fired pottery, William Kidd’s sculptures that resemble something from the ocean in outer space, and Jennifer McCurdy’s elegant creations in porcelain, pictured. The free, self-guided tour runs Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Visit tampatourdeclay.com for a map and complete listing of artists.

Print Matters: Into the Fold

Some years ago, when I worked at Florida CraftArt (then Florida Craftsmen), the gallery held an exhibition of artist’s books. I was blown away by the wide realm of creativity and possibilities that this medium offers. So I’m very exited about the Into the Fold exhibition at the Leslie Curran Gallery in St. Petersburg. The exhibit is a survey of the contemporary field of book art, with a focus on collaborative editions produced in Florida, particularly in an institutional setting. We’re fortunate to have a number of printmaking ateliers in the state, so there will be editions from USF’s Graphicstudio, the Letterpress and Book Arts Center at the Ringling College of Art and Design and the Tampa Book Art Studio at the University of Tampa. You’ll find examples ranging from historic woodcuts to laser cut bindings and experimental structures. The opening reception is 6-9 p.m. Saturday at 1431 Central Ave. articlesstpete.com.

A Fine Setting: PAVA Members Exhibit

PAVA, the Professional Association of Visual Artists, are the good people who bring the Cool Art Show to the Coliseum in St. Petersburg every summer. Now they’re having an exhibition of their members’ work, juried by county arts organization Creative Pinellas. The show is installed at the former Gulf Coast Museum of Art in Largo. It’s wonderful to see that great space be filled with art once again. The show is open from 4-8 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays, beginning today and running through Dec. 23. 12211 Walsingham Road. pava-artists.org.
