Art Planner: Alex Katz at TMA, Working Title and more

HIGH CONTRAST:ALEX KATZ: BLACK-AND-WHITE

Alex Katz is one of the most important living artists of our time. Although known for his large-scale paintings, he began a prolific career in printmaking in 1965, employing techniques of lithography, silk screen and woodcuts. A new show opening Thursday at the Tampa Museum of Art presents a survey of fairly recent (a few pieces were created in 2016) black-and-white prints by the legendary artist, as well as a small selection of bold color works to give the viewer an understanding of the full scope of the artist's body of work. Both longtime fans and newcomers to the artist will enjoy viewing his signature portraits of family and friends, renderings of Maine's countryside and still lifes, with the emphasis on line and form due to the stark contrast of the positive and negative spaces. The exhibit will remain on display though May 29. 120 W Gasparilla Plaza, Tampa. (813)274.8130. tampamuseum.org

From the Page to the Wall:Working Title

Working Title is a biannual art publication created by artist and curator Michael Crabb in 2012. The magazine showcases artists from the state and beyond, but because Crabb is a graduate of Ringling College of Art and Design and a Tampa resident, the publication is heavy on artists from west-central Florida. An exhibition opening Thursday at the Staybridge Suites in St. Petersburg showcases the work of 15 artists from Orlando to Sarasota. Artists include Gay Germain, Bryce Hudson and Tom Stephens, whose painting, Talladega, is pictured. The show will remain up through May. The opening reception is free to attend and happens from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at 940 Fifth Ave. S. (727) 898-6061. articlesstpete.com.

Copies of the free Working Title publication can be found locally at art centers and galleries including Articles Art Gallery and Custom Framing and the Dunedin Fine Arts Center, or you can view it online at acrabbprojectworkingtitle.blogspot.com.
