MUSEUM OF HISTORY: CARLTON WARD JR. AND ORANGE CRATES

Ward's gorgeous nature photographs, most recently those from the Florida Wildlife Corridor project, will be on view at the St. Petersburg Museum of History (as well as the Dunedin Fine Art Center, noted in last week's planner). The award-winning photographer's passionate advocacy for conservation needs few words; his images are pure eloquence. The 2012 project was a monumental undertaking, a 100-day, 1,000-mile expedition through the last natural path along the length of the Florida peninsula, which begins in the Everglades and ends in southern Georgia. In addition to the photographs, the exhibition features a re-creation of the team campsite with some of the photographer's equipment.

Also at the museum, "Crate Expectations: An Artful Look at Florida Citrus" is a fun history lesson in early tourism development. Florida citrus fruit was shipped across the United States, and since everyone knew what an orange looked like, promoters saw an opportunity to advertise other Florida attractions such as bathing beauties and Seminole Indians. This collection has 142 examples that include those from the golden years between the 1920 and the 1950s.

The museum, at 335 Second Ave. NE in St. Petersburg, is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $15 adults, $12 seniors, $9 military, students with ID and youths 6 to 17. Kids younger than 6 free. (727) 894-1052. spmoh.org.

SECRET WALLS: GRAFFITI BATTLE AT CASS

The Contemporary Art Space and Studio is hosting Secret Walls, an international movement that pits street artists against each other in a timed contest to create a large mural. It has been compared to Fight Club, but it doesn't have the movie's bloody fistfights, just a lot of creative competition.

Squaring off will be BASK, DENIAL, Frank Forte and Greg Mike beginning at 8 p.m. Friday.

CASS is offering much more in its gallery at 2722 S MacDill Ave., Tampa. Secret Walls is part of the Friday opening reception for a new group exhibition, "Corrosively Bright." Artists associated with the street genre that grew out of graffiti will be featured, as well as those who use surrealist elements. If the theme seems familiar, it is: an outgrowth across the bay of the SHINE Mural Festival in St. Petersburg. Some of the works are by artists such as Shark Toof, who created murals for the festival. Also in the show are Amandine Urrity, Andrea Wan, BASK, Ben Frost, Chris Buzelli, DENIAL, Frank Forte, Greg Mike, Indie 184, Rich Simmons and Yoskay Yamamoto.

The reception, from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday, is free, but reservations are required. Guests will enjoy live entertainment by DJ Fadar, catering by Datz and craft cocktails by the EDGE at the Epicurean. Limited edition prints will also be available for purchase. (813) 839-7135. info@casscontemporary.com.

THE CROSSROADS: SKETCHBOOKS AT SPC CLEARWATER

The gallery, 2465 Drew St., is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday. The show continues through Oct. 8. Free. (727) 791-2548. spcollege.edu/gallery.
