Art Planner: Secret Walls, sale at Graphicstudio

Art Battles: Secret Walls

Back in 2006 in London, artist Terry Guy founded Secret Walls, live art battles inspired by Marvel comics and graffiti. Now the event has spread throughout the world, including two previous ones in the bay area; a third happens this weekend at Tampa's Riverwalk. Two teams will battle it out in a timed contest to create an original piece on a white canvas using only black markers or black acrylic paint. Michelle Sawyer and Bekky Beukes make up Team Tampa, pitted against Baghead and Brian Butler of Team Miami. After 90 minutes, the audience votes on a winner. It begins at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, in conjunction with the RiverFest celebration, on the Riverwalk at the David A. Straz Jr. Center for the Performing Arts, 1010 N MacInnes Place. strazcenter.org.

TIME TO SHOP: Graphicstudio Benefit Sale

One of the most important facilities for art Tampa Bay has to offer is Graphicstudio at the University of South Florida in Tampa. The annual open house and benefit sale on Saturday is a wonderful opportunity to collect works at a discounted price by a number of esteemed artists. World-class artists including James Rosenquist, Chuck Close and Kiki Smith have created at the atelier for the production of limited edition prints and sculpture multiples. If you've never been there, you'll be impressed by the presses and workrooms where artistic processes have been innovated. All sales benefit Graphicstudio's continuing research and educational programming. The free event runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., with limited numbers available at a discount. 3702 Spectrum Blvd., Suite 100. (813) 974-5871. graphicstudio.usf.edu.
