Dunedin Fine Art Center is celebrating textile arts and quilts with these shows

Tasteful Textiles: Quilts and Textiles in Dunedin

Quilts are an art form that everyone can relate to, even if it's only because you slept under one. They are also a long-standing tradition in fiber arts, and in history. See how contemporary quiltmakers and textile artists approach the craft in a quartet of shows currently on display at the Dunedin Fine Art Center. "New Quilts from an Old Favorite: New York Beauty" is an exhibit of 18 finalists and winning quilts from a challenge by the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Ky., to create original quilts based on the classic New York Beauty block pattern. In "SAQA Florida: Growth," Florida-based members of Studio Art Quilt Associates, including Gretchen Brooks (work pictured), explored the theme of development. Erin E. Castellan combines her practices in textile design and paintings in "Slow Seeing," an assembly of embroidered paintings on fabric and paper. In "Shirt Tales," Karol Kusmaul has created figures and portraits from upcycled fabrics. They all remain on display through Aug. 18.

As programming for "Growth," members of SAQA will demonstrate various techniques in the gallery every Saturday through Aug. 12. This Saturday, Marlene Glickman demonstrates instant color with dyes. Demos are free with admission, $10, $8 seniors, $5 students, free 12 and younger and members. dfac.org.
