Memory, Mind, Matter: Eduardo Chillida

The Dalí Museum's new exhibition, opening Saturday, presents the works of Spanish sculptor Eduardo Chillida. In addition to 16 sculptures and a large-scale wall mural, Chillida's drawings and unique collages, called "gravitations," will also be displayed. Basque-born Chillida was known for his monumental works in public places in the United States and Europe, characterized by his use of natural materials, such as alabaster, steel and stone. His work explores "humanity's relationships to space and organic forms," very much the way surrealists Joan Miró and Alberto Giacometti did in their work. This will be the first show dedicated to sculpture the Dalí has presented since the opening of its new building in 2011. It opens at 10 a.m. Saturday. 1 Dalí Blvd., St. Petersburg. thedali.org.

Noteworthy: ArtWalk Openings

St. Petersburg's Second Saturday ArtWalk is a great opportunity to see truly remarkable exhibitions and to discover new galleries. Here are three to check out on Saturday evening.

Five Deuces Galleria (222 22nd St. S) is a studio space and gallery that, while not brand new to the Warehouse Arts District, now has 22 artists working there. They're having a grand opening celebration from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, but they'll also be open for ArtWalk. Artists work in a wide array of media, including paintings, metal art and 3D rice paper creations. The studio has three distinct areas: one building made from reclaimed materials, a garden area and a new construction gallery space. They'll be open from 5-9 p.m. Saturday.

Sculptor Mark Aeling of MGA Sculpture Studio has a new exhibition opening at Soft Water Studios, from 5-10 p.m. Saturday. The pieces in "Objectification" are on a more intimate scale than the large-scale sculptures that Aeling is known for. Yet they are just as impressive; A Cutting Remark is an undulating cloud of scissors while the stainless steel swarm of insects in Butterfly Kiss seems to multiply by the shadows it creates on the wall. 515 22nd St. S.

Fresh off her installation for the set of Voodoo MacBeth at the Studio@620, artist Ya La'Ford opens her exhibition, "The Human Pattern" at the Leslie Curran Gallery. The series of geometric, stain-dyed paintings, created with self-made pigments and paints reflect La'Ford's Jamaican heritage, her experience as an American student and artist, as well as her extensive travel and investigation of other cultures. The opening happens from 6-9 p.m. at 1431 Central Ave.
