Skateboard art exhibition in St. Petersburg honors 'Screaming Hand'

The relationship between skateboarding and art has yielded some of the most creative, original and sometimes disturbing pieces of artwork out there, such as Jim Phillips' iconic Screaming Hand image. That image is honored in a traveling tribute exhibition, on display at Bloom Art Center, 910 Fifth Ave. N, St. Petersburg, from 6 p.m. to midnight March 5 and 6 to 9 p.m. March 6. Organized by Santa Cruz Skateboards, for which Phillips created the logo when he was art director in 1985, the exhibition features more than 48 influential artists, including skateboarders Steve Caballero and Mark Gonzales, Phillips himself and his son, Jimbo. An audio tour available via smartphone reveals artists' backstories about creating their pieces. Westside Skate Shop hosts the grand opening, which features skateboard demos and music by DJ re:Pete and Deadborns. Local artists' homages to "The Hand" are also on display.
