USS Calhoun County diagram and history
The U.S.S. Calhoun County dumped more than 12,000 barrels containing radioactive waste into the Atlantic Ocean from 1946 to 1960. If the barrels didn't sink, sailors shot holes in the drums to send them to the bottom. The government cannot say exactly what kind of waste was disposed of in this manner. It remains on the sea floor to this day.
