Continued high humidity with increased chance for afternoon thunderstorms in Tampa Bay

It should be a sunny Thursday around Tampa Bay with partly skies and a 20-30 percent chance of rain by the late afternoon.

Most of those storms will be driven further inland by the coastal breeze sweeping in from the Gulf of Mexico, according to the National Weather Service. The highest chance of rain will be east of Interstate 4 by the late afternoon to early evening.

EXTENDED FORECAST: The 10-day outlook for the Tampa Bay area

Highs will reach around 92 by the afternoon, but high humidity will drive heat indexes to around 101-106, forecasters said.

Overnight, temperatures will drop to a muggy mid to upper 70s with partly cloudy skies. Many of the evening storms will dry up overnight.

Friday will see an increased chance of rain and thunderstorms, with highs reaching the low 90s by the afternoon. There is a 50 percent chance of rain by the late afternoon and into the evening. Expect to see thunderstorms with gusty winds, heavy rainfall and frequent lightning, forecasters said.

There is a higher chance of rain this weekend as a moisture-ridden air mass moves through the area. Temperatures will drop to the upper 80s and continue through the week. Humidity is expected to continue to be very high.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Chris has been downgraded from a Category 2 hurricane just 24 hours earlier, according to the National Hurricane Center. The system is tracking toward Newfoundland, threatening storms and dangerous surf.

The remnants of Beryl continue to travel through the Atlantic and seems to be following in the path of Chris. It no longer has surface circulation and is little more than a collection of disorganized showers and thunderstorms.
