Tampa Bay Weather

Forecast: Cool, dry air a precursor to rainy Sunday across Tampa Bay

Folks in the Tampa Bay area can expect a strong breeze today with winds up to nearly 15 mph, but clear skies and a lot of sunshine should be a sign of relief.

Following a cold front that swept over South Florida on Wednesday, temperatures have dipped below average, forecasters said. Early-morning commuters should bring a jacket as lows are starting out in the mid 50s under mostly clear skies.

The afternoon will bring a lot of sunshine and very low humidity. The dry air has spurned a red flag warning from the National Weather Service for much of the bay area — excluding Pinellas — meaning the region could see a a heightened wildfire threat.

Cool weather should continue into the weekend, forecasters said. Temperatures on Saturday should return to around 76.

By Sunday, however, folks heading to theFirestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg and Valspar Championship should bring a raincoat. Another cold front is expected to produce a 60 percent chance of scattered showers on Sunday into Monday.

After the cold front passes, cool weather will persist into next week.
