What to watch this weekend: 'The Walking Dead,' Stephen King's '1922'

100 episodes of walkers: The Walking Dead

Can you believe how far Rick Grimes has come? Seven years ago on Halloween, AMC debuted The Walking Dead based on a comic book about the world after a zombie apocalypse . The first few episodes were terrifying for Rick (Andrew Lincoln), who had just woken from a coma to find an empty hospital, except for chained cafeteria doors marked "Don't Open Dead Inside." Now the horror series hits 100 episodes with the premiere of its eighth season, and it's moved from undead scares to focusing on the fight for survival in a new world without established government or civilized law. The premiere of Season 8 sees Rick and the people of the Hilltop, Alexandria and the Kingdom formulating and executing a plan to overthrow Negan and the Saviors. Fans who wavered during last season's clunky storylines will be soothed by the new season going back to what made The Walking Dead so popular in the first place. Season 8 begins at 9 p.m. Sunday on AMC.

Gothic heartland horror: 1922

What a year for Stephen King. With the addition of 1922, the acclaimed author has racked up at least five adaptations of his works in 2017. This Netflix original is inspired by his novella, which follows a poor farmer (Thomas Jane) clinging to his land in Nebraska. His wife (Molly Parker) wants to sell the land and move to a bigger city. He's not having it, so he kills her and ropes his 14-year-old son in on the act to ensure his silence. In a twist on Edgar Allen Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart, the farmer starts to lose his mind over the murder and eventually spews a confession to the police. It's a grim tale about the poisoning of a soul. Now available on Netflix.

Scaredy stars: Scared Famous

The world needs this type of show right now. On Monday, VH1 debuts "spine-chilling" horror comedy competition series Scared Famous with an all-star cast of characters from reality shows like RuPaul's Drag Race, America's Next Top Model, Mob Wives, Love & Hip Hop and Black Ink Crew. Ten contestants will face off in spooky and gruesome challenges inspired by modern scary movies while moving into an eerie house in Savannah, Ga. They'll scream, they'll cry and they'll battle through all the delicious drama for a chance to win $100,000 for charity. The cast include Alaska Thunderf---, Erica Mena, Eva Marcille, Miss Nikki Baby, Safaree Samuels, Yung Joc and Tiffany "New York" Pollard.  9 p.m. Monday, VH1.

Back to Hawkins: Stranger Things rewatch

Don't get caught in the Upside Down. Now is the best time to revisit last year's summer hit. Stranger Things is clearly a love letter to ‘80s sci-fi and teen dramas. There are hat tips to E.T., The Goonies, Poltergeist and some Stephen King horror flicks. But the first season quickly morphed into a phenomenon of its own, spawning a global fandom of people who were obsessed with the characters and goings-on of small-town Hawkins, Ind. The first season simply followed a missing boy, his closest friends and family and one strange little girl. Top secret government experiments and dangerous supernatural forces tied them all together. But before jumping to 1984 and the aftermath of the Demogorgon's wrath, revisit the captivating eight episodes that started it all.

Review: Stranger Things is a thrilling ode to '80s sci-fi and cult horror
