(Welcome to 10 Days of Taylor, our epic countdown to the epic finale of the most epic pop tour of all time: Taylor Swift's 1989 Tour, stopping Halloween Night at Raymond James Stadium. For all of our Taylor Swift coverage, click here.)
You know her as one of the most powerful singers in the world, a lover of cats named after Law & Order characters and the reigning queen of all #squadgoals. But do you know Taylor Swift, the baker?
Swift's many talents extend beyond the world of pop music to the kitchen, where she has been known to whip up treats for her ever-growing collection of super famous friends. What do you think she's buying on all those trips to Whole Foods?
Exhibit A: When one of Taylor's BFFs Selena Gomez went on the Ellen DeGeneres Show earlier this month, she talked about some #squad requirements.
"Well, I think baking is involved," Selena says.
Ellen: "You have to know how to bake?!"
Selena: "I mean you don't have to, but … it helps."
This penchant for cooking fits in with Tay's cozy, cat-loving, I'm-just-like-you persona. Exhibit B: For Fourth of July, she posted photos of her pals making a flag cake at one of her houses, calling herself a "Barefoot Contessa fangirl."Exhibit C: This totally ordinary, average post of Swift cooking a meal with a supermodel.
Her baking prowess first hit the spotlight almost exactly a year ago, when she posted photos of Dark Chocolate Peppermint Cookies and Chai Sugar Cookies on her Instagram account and fans of Swift and cookies alike went crazy. Fans wanted to know how they could mimic their hero's skills with a spatula, so recipes were requested on Tumblr, and Taylor obliged. Here is the recipe for Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies, which she made for the 1989 Secret Sessions fan party at her house. And Swift spent a lot of time on a long Tumblr post about those Chai Sugar Cookies, detailing her methods and offering sage baking advice. Get the recipe here. The girl knows a thing or two about crafting an icing.
Key bits of baking wisdom include:
"This is a recipe for basic insanely good sugar cookies, I added the chair element to the recipe because I thought it would infuse cozy holiday vibez into the cookie and it really did."
"I made an icing for the cookies, but they're fine on their own. If you want to make icing for them, just mix 1 cup powdered sugar with 1/4 T-spoon of nutmeg, 1/4 T-spoon of cinnamon and 3 TAYblespoons <- - (I'm so annoying, it astounds me sometimes) of milk or eggnog if you can find it this time of year. The more milk/eggnog you add, the more your icing will become a glaze. But glazes are legit too so basically just LIVE YOUR LIFE."
"If you're really feeling like living on the edge, you can go ahead and add a few drop sof food coloring to the icing to make it festive. No one is going to stop you. Why? Cause the bakers gonna bake bake bake bake bake."
That last line must have inspired the inevitable parody Swift did of her own song, Bake It Off, a charming video she shot last year with chef Jamie Oliver for Stand up to Cancer. Sample lyrics: "It's like I got this sponge cake, in my mind, saying it's gonna taste so fine."
Because Tay's just gotta bake, bake, bake, bake, bake.
