Healthy St. Petersburg awards empowerment grants to nonprofits

ST. PETERSBURG — The Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg has announced that it has awarded "empowerment grants" to boost the efforts of eight small to midsize nonprofits in South Pinellas.

The grants are: $64,400 to Bright Community Trust for a new full-time staff position and to implement succession planning for the organization; $65,000 to Inner Explorer, to promote mindfulness practice at 24 Head Start and Early Head Start centers in the St. Petersburg; $99,642 to the League of Women Voters of Florida Education Fund, to create a health index report that will identify challenges and fuel solutions; $50,000 to Lighthouse of Pinellas to hire a full-time staff person who will help blind and visually impaired clients find employment; $100,000 to Pinellas County Homeless Leadership Board, Inc., to pilot a program allowing south county emergency shelters to locate immediate, alternative housing for families with minor children; $100,000 to the Police Athletic League of St. Petersburg, to help open a satellite location in the Jordan Park Housing Development with youth after-school programs; $50,000 to hire an executive director at Project Prosper, which helps local immigrants and refugees; and $40,000 to Start Right, Now, which addresses youth homelessness, to develop a five-year plan and offer therapy.
