The Gulf High boys soccer team will attempt to win its second consecutive Class 3A, Region IV championship tonight at 7 p.m. at Des Little Field. The Buccaneers, who won the Class 3A, District 8 title with a 3-0 victory over Hudson on Friday, face Sanford Seminole - a team that did not win a match this season until the 3A-District 7 playoffs began.
Seminole was 0-12-2 during the regular season but swept through three tournament games, including a 1-0 win over Orlando Edgewater on Friday.
"I can't be fooled by their record," Gulf coach Ron Barnett said on Monday. "They played a lot of good (Class) 4A schools from that area, like Lake Mary and Oviedo. I'd much rather have them at 16-3-1 or 18-0-0."
Admission is $3 per person, and only FHSAA passes will be allowed.
Gulf won the Region IV championship last year with a 2-1 victory over Oviedo in overtime. The Bucs lost the Section II title game to Satellite Beach the following week.
A rematch between Gulf and Satellite Beach could become a reality on Thursday. Satellite, the 3A-6 champion, plays District 3A-5 titlist Daytona Beach-Seabreeze for the Region III trophy tonight.
If Satellite Beach and Gulf both win, the Section II game will be played in New Port Richey.
