TAMPA - Hillsborough High senior forward Teddy Pamplona was the only Floridian named to Parade's High School All-America Soccer Team, which was released by the magazine Sunday. Pamplona, who finished with 23 goals and 21 assists for the Terriers, was one of 37 players named to the 12th annual national all-star team. Seventeen states were represented. Pamplona is one of the eight forwards honored.
Selected by a coaching panel representing the United States Soccer Federation and the NCAA, the All-America Team is led by national player of the year Claudio Reyna, a midfielder from Newark, N.J.'s St. Benedict's Prep.
"When I heard he (Pamplona) was nominated, I knew he'd make it," Terriers head coach Lee Vohdin said Monday. "The coaches around here have known he's national caliber for a while now. He's gotten a better look because we've gotten better. It says a lot for our team. We've come a long way in the last two years."
Along with fellow senior forward Adrian Bush, the 5-foot-6, 140-pound Pamplona led the Terriers to a school-record 13-4-2 won-loss mark this season. Hillsborough was eliminated 2-1 by Gaither in Friday's Class 4A, District 6 tournament final.
A member of the U.S. Junior National under-16 team last year, Pamplona has taken part in international competition at the youth level. He missed his junior season due to academic ineligibility, but made the state select all-star squad as a Terriers' sophomore.
