TAMPA - A 26-year-old Tampa man was charged Monday with stabbing his neighbor to death, according to police records. Todd Jenkins of 8911 N 38th St., Apt. C, was charged with first-degree murder and booked into Hillsborough County Jail. He remained there Monday without bail, a jail spokeswoman said.
Jeannette Williams, 25, of 8913 N 38th St., Apt. B, was found by rescue workers about 12:10 a.m. on a landing outside her apartment. She was bleeding heavily from numerous stab wounds to the chest and was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital, where she died shortly thereafter, Officer Donna Middlebrook said.
Police said Jenkins and another neighbor were waiting with Williams when rescue workers arrived. Jenkins first told police he heard screams and saw someone running from Williams' apartment, Middlebrook said.
When detectives noticed a bloody handprint on his jeans, they began to question him further and found that his story did not match another neighbor's story, Middlebrook said.
Tony Curtis Waldron, the other neighbor, told police he also heard the screams, but looked out his door and saw Jenkins running from Williams' apartment with a shiny object in his hands, an arrest report said.
When detectives questioned Jenkins further, they said he admitted to killing the woman. The report said Jenkins knocked on Williams' door shortly after midnight. When she answered, they spoke briefly, and then he stabbed her numerous times with a knife and fled.
Middlebrook said detectives are not certain of the motive for the slaying.
