Tarpon bass 'grabbing about anything thrown their way'

The majority of bass at Lake Tarpon spawned during last Friday's full moon and are actively feeding. "They're off the beds and eating almost constantly," said Ron Gibson at Tarpon Tom's Tackle. "After starving during the spawning period, they're grabbing about anything thrown their way."

Obviously, the best baits have been large live shiners. Gibson said most anglers are using shiners in the 6- to 12-inch range.

"But you've got to fish those large baitfish back in the weeds, so I recommend line in the 15- to 25-pound test class," Gibson said.

For anglers who like artificial lures, Gibson said the Culprit Red Shad and the Bandit blue and black plastic worms are good choices.

"Still, any dark-colored plastic worm should work," he said.
