When baseball diamonds were a girl's best friend

HOLLYWOOD - Following a barrage of pictures about men on the baseball diamond, Hollywood is going to make one about women who play the game. Penny Marshall will produce A League of Their Own, based on the real-life All American Girls Professional Baseball League, which played from 1942 until 1953. For Twentieth Century-Fox, League will roll in the Midwest in June, with David Anspaugh (Hoosiers) directing. Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandell (Parenthood) wrote the script.

Set in the '40s, the story involves the league's origin during the man shortage of World War II.
