Wounded officer leaves hospital

TAMPA - Police officer Douglas E. Maxwell, who was shot in the groin last week with his own gun, was released from the hospital Monday afternoon, authorities said. Maxwell, 27, a five-year veteran of the police force, was trying to arrest a youth suspected of dealing heroin and crack cocaine in the Ponce De Leon public-housing complex Thursday night when the shooting occurred.

After Maxwell subdued the 16-year-old boy, he was putting his 9mm semiautomatic handgun back into his waistband when the weapon went off.

The bullet fragments lodged in his groin near the femoral artery.

Police had said they probably wouldn't charge the 16-year-old for contributing to the shoot-ing.

But police spokesman Steve Cole said Monday the Hillsborough State Attorney's Office still is investigating.

Cole said investigators have not yet interviewed Maxwell in depth about the shooting because the officer has been taking medication since Friday.

He will probably be interviewed this morning, Cole said.
