This year, Valentine's Day means that some very select high schoolfootball players are getting their hearts' desire: college football
In the game of college football recruiting, today is Super Bowl Sunday. The national letter-of-intent signing period begins today, meaning that recruits everywhere will be putting their college intentions down on paper.
In Hillsborough County, at least a dozen standouts are accepting Division I scholarships today. Two others still are considering their scholarship offers.
Most of Hillsborough's recruits made verbal commitments to their individual school of choice over the past three weeks. Among those announcing their decisions Tuesday were Chamberlain defensive tackle Fred Johnson (Morehead State), Hillsborough defensive back Lester Weaver (Youngstown State), Tampa Bay Vo-Tech offensive lineman Soloman Gardner (Ball State), Leto linebacker and tight end Tom Demarest (Murray State), and the King tandem of offensive lineman Greg Parks and running back Holton Buggs (both Texas Southern).
Letters of intent are binding agreements between recruits and colleges that prohibit recruits from accepting scholarships from more than one school. A player who breaks a letter of intent to transfer to another NCAA school that offers football scholarships must sit out two seasons.
