Motorist who hit, killed bicyclist flees scene

ST. PETERSBURG - Investigators are searching for a motorist who drove a small, dark car into a man riding a bicycle Sunday night. Melvin V. Griffin, 24, of 2936 DeSoto Way S, was killed instantly when the car struck him, tossing him in front of a second vehicle at 37th Street and 19th Avenue S, police said. They said the driver, who fled after the accident, was southbound on 37th Street when the car struck Griffin, throwing him in front of a northbound 1986 Pontiac. The driver of the Pontiac, Alfred Maruggi, stopped his vehicle and wasn't charged in the incident. Griffin apparently was headed east on 19th Avenue S when he was struck by the cars. School Board to vote on zone changes today The Pinellas County School Board will vote on recommending school zone changes for next year when it meets today. The meeting starts at 9 a.m. in the board office at 1960 E Druid Road, Clearwater. The rezoning part of the meeting will begin soon after 9. The board will discuss changes involving high schools first, followed by the recommendations on elementary schools. Those who wish to speak on an item must sign up at least five minutes before the item is called.

Speakers will be limited to three minutes.
