Traffic jams and delays occurred in downtown Clearwater on Tuesday when some lanes were closed during repairs to the Memorial Causeway Bridge. The traffic snarls stretched for blocks around Pierce Boulevard and Cleveland Street at the city's waterfront. Some lanes leading to and from the drawbridge were closed to allow maintenance crews to work on the span leading to Clearwater Beach.
Repairs are expected to be completed sometime today, said Dewey Oliver, state Department of Transportation district bridge inspector.
During the weekend, an underwater cable linked to the drawbridge controls broke. The bridge was unable to close properly and caused delays during heavy weekend traffic.
The electric cable runs from the bridge control room to the west side of the drawbridge, providing the power to raise that part of the bridge, Oliver said.
Maintenance crews will finish replacing the cable, and divers will string the cable under the bridge today.
