Britain may drop S. African sanctions

LONDON - The British government said Wednesday it was ready to drop sanctions against new investment in South Africa unilaterally if necessary. Winding up a parliamentary debate on government policy toward South Africa, Foreign Office minister William Waldegrave said Britain reserved the right to act separately from its European Community partners.

Officials said Britain would lobby for lifting the ban on new investment when EC foreign ministers meet in Dublin on Tuesday.
