Mackerel being caught at piers on tide changes

Spanish mackerel have been more visible along the Suncoast as the weather settles. Anglers at Redington Long Pier, Pier 60, the piers at Fort DeSoto Park, and the piers on the north end of Anna Maria Island all report catches of mackerel.

At Redington, Helen Dobbs caught two and Rich Howard caught four Wednesday. The mackerel there are working mornings and evenings on tide changes.

Tony Young at Pier 60 said the mackerel there also are swimming with the tides, but the fishing is spotty.

Pier anglers at Fort DeSoto and Anna Maria Island are catching their mackerel on incoming tides.

Cut and whole minnows and small silver spoons are the best baits.
