Car crashes into pillar

An employee of Phar-Mor Discounts Pharmacy, above, sweeps debris intopiles after an 83-year-old man lost control of his car and rammed a tiled pillar outside the store on U.S. 19 in Clearwater on Thursday.

George Ronald Hamman of Clearwater, the driver of the car, was taken to Mease Hospital Dunedin, said Clearwater Police Officer David Miller. Hamman was in stable condition Thursday, a hospital spokeswoman said. Hamman might have passed out behind the wheel of his 1984 Buick, Miller said. Paige Seidl of Dunedin, at left, comforts her son Devon after her car also was hit by Hamman. A 77-year-old Clearwater woman was injured when flying debris struck her forehead, Miller said.
