A man police believe was 33 years old and from Clearwater died Thursday evening after his car ran into a sign pole on N Highland Avenue at Joel Lane, said Clearwater police spokesman Wayne Shelor. Police suspect the man died from a heart attack and not from injuries suffered in the accident, Shelor said. Police did not name the man because they had not verified his identity Thursday, Shelor said.
The man was driving a 1974 Chevrolet Vega north on Highland about 6:30 p.m. when the car appeared to accelerate before veering into the pole, witnesses told police. The man was taken to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg where he died about an hour later, Shelor said.
