Police find mother of abandoned baby

Police have identified the mother of a newborn baby left Jan. 2 in atrash bin in Bradenton.

The mother, a juvenile who is not being identified by police, admitted to police Wednesday that she gave birth to the boy, called Baby Jimmy Doe by authorities.

The state attorney's office in Manatee County is reviewing the case and will decide whether to file charges against the girl, Bradenton police said Thursday.

The baby had been wrapped in a garbage bag and left in a bin in the 200 block of 13th Avenue W. He was about eight hours old when found.

Baby Jimmy Doe was hospitalized and placed in the custody of the state Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services. Doctors determined that the baby had developed an infection, probably from bacteria in the trash bin. He later was released from Manatee Memorial Hospital.

At least 12 couples have expressed an interest in adopting the baby.

His mother was identified through evidence collected in the investigation, police said.
