Top-seeded Tampa Prep coasted into the semifinal round of the Class A,District 9 girls basketball tournament by defeating the No. 9 seed Pathway Christian 85-30 Thursday night at Bayshore Christian.
In other A-9 play, senior center Merrill Mullis scored 29 points to lead fourth-seeded Berkeley Prep (15-6) over the No. 5 seed Santa Fe 55-42 in the afternoon, followed by third-seeded Lakeland Christian's 63-23 victory over No. 11 Vanguard.
Rounding out the final four is the No. 7 seed Temple Heights who provided the only upset of the night by defeating second-seeded Seminole Presbyterian 43-24.
Ranked No. 10 in the Class A state poll, the Terrapins (19-3) were led by Jennifer Henderson's 23 points. Junior guard Amy Weldon had 21 points, including six three-point baskets, to lead Pathway (4-18) in the losing effort.
With only a two-point lead after three periods, 36-34, Berkeley Prep outscored Santa Fe 19-8 in the fourth quarter to seal the win and earn the right to face its crosstown rival Tampa Prep in the semifinals tonight at 8 at Bayshore Christian.
Preceding that game, Temple Heights will face Lakeland Christian in the other semifinal matchup at 6 p.m. The final is scheduled for Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Bayshore Christian.
