Wintry weather covers much of nation

Rain, snow and freezing rain fell over much of the nation Thursday,snarling traffic and weighing down power lines, and temperatures hit record lows in the West and record highs in the Deep South. Winter weather watches extending into Friday were posted for northern Maine, Upper Michigan, the northwestern half of Wisconsin, northeastern Minnesota, much of Nevada, and the Sierra Nevada and northeastern plateau of California. A warning of an overnight hard freeze was posted for the deserts in much of Arizona. A tornado touched down east of Mere, La., damaging a mobile home and slightly hurting three people.
