Sheepshead had anglers reeling at the Merry Pier

Sheepshead was a popular catch for anglers at Pass-a-Grille's Merry Pier on Friday. "They've been catching lots and lots of sheepshead today," said Sibylle Duncan, who works at the pier. "They've been finding them mostly around the pilings."

In addition to sheepshead, anglers reeled in a few Spanish mackerel, Duncan said.

Duncan said the best time to fish was during the early morning hours. Sand fleas and shrimp were the prime choices for bait.

Carol White, of Causeway Bait and Charter in Dunedin, said anglers who fished off the Dunedin Causeway and neighboring seawalls had luck, too.

"They're catching flounder, whiting, mackerel and trout," White said.

The fish were the most active in the morning hours, White said.

Shrimp was the most common choice of bait.
