Burgess wins Florida 200 race in a Pontiac

Rich Burgess took the lead with 18 laps remaining and held off Robert Huffman's late charge by two lengths to win the 80-lap Florida 200 NASCAR Dash for four-cylinder compact cars.

Burgess, whose Pontiac Sunbird averaged 114.449 mph, picked up the $12,225 top prize. Huffman, also driving a Sunbird, won $7,000.

Injured EMT has surgery on both knees

Mike Staley, the lieutenant from the Port Orange Fire Department who was injured in last Sunday's ARCA 200 race, underwent surgery on both knees Friday to repair ligament damage.

Staley, 35, an emergency medical technician, was listed in satisfactory condition at Halifax Medical Center and Dr. Albert Gillespie, who performed the surgery, said he expected Staley to be discharged next week.

Staley was injured during the crash in which driver Julius "Slick" Johnson of Florence, S.C., sustained fatal injuries. Johnson died Wednesday night.
