Eagles rule 3A-II meet

With six state qualifiers, including three individual champions, Springstead stole the show Saturday at the Class 3A, Region II high school wrestling tournament. The Eagles mathematically had clinched their first regional title after the consolation-round matches, outscoring two-time defending region champion Orlando-Bishop Moore and tourney host Auburndale, the state's top-ranked 3A team.

"Our good kids came through," said Springstead head coach Bob Levija, whose Eagles finished second to Bishop Moore the past two years. "The pressure was on, but our kids hung tough."

Springstead's Kevin Levija, John Lane and Jack Bolan each claimed individual titles.

By placing fourth or better, 18 North Suncoast wrestlers and 10 from Tampa teams advanced to next weekend's 3A state championship meet, at West Palm Beach.

Other North Suncoast wrestlers capturing regional championships were Gulf's Travis DeWalt, Zeke Casarez of Zephyrhills, and Hudson's Tim Green.

Final tournament scores and results of late matches were incomplete at press time Saturday night.
