A 6-month-old Largo baby born with a rare type of dwarfism was listed in serious and guarded condition late Saturday in a Maryland hospital. Michael Schaffer, who lives at Autumn Chase Apartments in southwest Largo with his parents, Vonnie and Tom Schaffer, underwent surgery that was estimated to take between eight and 10 hours at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore on Friday. The surgery was to correct a bend in his spine.

A hospital spokeswoman said it was too early to tell whether the operation was successful.
