St. Petersburg earned state berth with total domination

From the beginning of St. Petersburg's 3-0 victory over West Palm Beach-Wellington in the Class 3A, Section III boys soccer championship, the Green Devils (20-4-2) applied pressure from every position on the field to lessen the effectiveness of the Wolverines. Brandon Hale and Luis Pizano set the tempo in midfield, with the former playing long passes to forwards Rivers Guthrie, Justin DeStoppelaire and Luke Langston, and the latter dazzling the fans with his crafty ball-handling skills.

The first goal came at 35 minutes. Hale sent a long ball in to the area, where Pizano was ready to take the ball and score.

Mustoe got into the act just 22 seconds later, capitalizing on a rebound in front of Wolverine goal keeper Ryan Paul.

The tap-in was enough to spark the Green Devils in the second half, as defenders Aksone Phetsadasack, Richard Painter, Mark Jennings, and Don Songbandith held Wellington scoreless.

On one occasion, Hale raced 60 yards from midfield to steal the ball from the feet of Wolverine striker Andy Mohammend, who was preparing to shoot.

In goal, David Masi made three key saves to keep St. Petersburg's opponent off the scoreboard.

The closest Wellington came to scoring was when a Green Devils defender passed the ball back to Masi. Masi had to leap to his right to keep the ball from going into the goal.

Later, Masi dominated his penalty area, collecting crosses and passes.

With eight minutes left, Mustoe and DeStoppelaire put the game away for St. Petersburg.

Mustoe picked up a loose ball on the left wing and shot to the far post, striking it.

DeStoppelaire followed the shot and finished into an empty net.
