Lakeland Christian used a third-quarter surge and a controlled offense to put away Tampa Prep 55-49 Saturday night and take the championship of the girls Class A, District 9 basketball tournament. Janette Tucker and Jennifer Robinson had 21 points each for the Vikings (15-12), who play at Bradenton Christian Tuesday night for the Region V title.
Jennifer Henderson scored 18 for the Terrapins (20-4), who appeared to be worn out from the come-from-behind victory over Berkeley Prep on Friday night.
"We were just lifeless tonight," Prep coach Craig Keeler said. "I was worried about that, but I thought we still had enough talent to pull it out."
The Terrapins were unable to put a real run together, but still only trailed by two at the half.
The third quarter was the difference in the game, as the Vikings built up an 11-point advantage that proved insurmountable for Tampa Prep.
"We were ready for them," Vikings coach Jeff Karns said. "We knew three weeks ago that it would be us and them in the finals, and we've been getting ready for it ever since."
