Driver sought in fatal hit-and-run

Florida Highway Patrol troopers are looking for the driver in a fatal hit-and-run accident early Sunday morning at Starkey Road north of 100th Avenue in Seminole. Jonathan Thomas Burke, 17, of 12330 114th St. N was riding a bicycle about 6:15 a.m. Sunday when he was hit. Burke was flown to Bayfront Medical Center where he died a few hours later. Anyone with information is asked to contact Trooper P.W. Curtas at 937-1700 or 570-5010.

Burke was the third traffic fatality in Pinel-las County in less than eight hours.

Earlier Sunday, Annie Marie Marler, 25, of 6924 Stones Throw Circle N in St. Petersburg apparently lost control of her 1989 Toyota while traveling north on Interstate 275 south of 54th Avenue N, Florida Highway Patrol said.

She drove up on the median and fell back into the northbound lanes, where her car flipped over four or five times. It slid several hundred feet on the roof. Ms. Marler was thrown from the car toward the shoulder of the road. She was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police also have identified the victim in an accident late Saturday night in the 800 block of22nd Avenue S.

Herbert Broomfield Jr., 45, address unknown, was either sitting or kneeling at 10:55 p.m. Saturday in the westbound lane of 22nd Avenue S, police said.

Dennis Emberton, 30, of 12001 Belcher Road said he did not see Broomfield until the last second and could not stop. He ran over Broomfield, police said.

Broomfield was pronounced dead at the scene and police speculated that Broomfield had been the subject of a complaint of drunk and disorderly conduct minutes earlier at a nearby Texaco station. Police said the investigation is continuing.
