Barons oust Mustangs in A-10 opener

Three guards combined for 47 points as St. Petersburg Catholic buried Northside Christian 79-57 in the first round of the Class A, District 10 boys basketball tournament Monday night. In other games, New Port Richey Christian got 36 points from Shawn Goodman and downed Admiral Farragut Academy 74-68, and Lakeside Christian beat Canterbury 66-43.

St. Petersburg Catholic and Lakeside Christian face off in the quarterfinals Thursday at 2:45 p.m., and New Port Richey Christian meets top-seeded Keswick Christian at 8 p.m. Three more opening-round games are scheduled today beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Tim Richert, St. Petersburg Catholic's leading scorer, was off his game in the first half Monday night but Steve Zubowicz and Lee Shawn Thomas picked up the slack until Richert got on track.

"I couldn't get my shot down in the first half," said Richert, who is averaging 24.9 points and six three-pointers a game. "The other players really helped me tonight."

He finished with a game-high 19 points and Zubowicz and Thomas added 14 apiece. Ryan Kraus led Northside Christian with 17.
