A 39-year-old man who authorities say ransacked his mother's home, murdered her and stole her car to escape was arrested Monday, according to jail records. Gregory S. Bias was arrested about 1 p.m. by sheriff's deputies about five weeks after his mother was found beaten to death in her N Nebraska Avenue home. According to authorities, Bias had been staying with his mother, Clarice M. Bias, 66, for several days before the murder Jan. 15.

The security guard at the National Alliance of Postal and Federal Employees federal housing development told police he heard loud voices and screaming shortly before midnight and then saw Mrs. Bias' son leave in his mother's car.

Gregory Bias was charged with first-degree murder and auto theft. He was being held late Monday without bail at the Hillsborough County Jail, a jail spokeswoman said.
