New interim police chief may be announced today

City Manager Gil Hess said Monday that he hopes to announce a new interim police chief today. Police Chief David Cook has been suspended without pay since his indictment last month on charges of grand theft and obstructing a state investigation of the department. Lt. Richard Martin was named interim chief, but the City Council gave Hess approval to select a replacement after hearing reports that the force was divided under Martin.Accused city worker quits

CRYSTAL RIVER _ A city employee accused of using city-owned sand to build a swimming pool at his home resigned Monday during a hearing with City Manager Gil Hess. Michael Barretto, who was supervisor of streets and drainage, gave Hess a one-sentence letter of resignation that did not say why he was quitting. Hess would not comment on whether Barretto admitted the charge or tried to defend himself in the hearing.

Senior parents day today

LECANTO _ Lecanto High School's senior parents day is from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. today. Parents of seniors should enter the school's front entrance, where they can pick up an itinerary. Then they may visit classrooms. Parents days for the parents of juniors and sophomores will be later this school year.
