Dade City karate team kicks up victories at tournament

Art Guerra of Ridge Manor, Derek Brunet of Spring Hill and the team from Dade City were the big winners last week at the 13th annual Florida American Karate Federation Winter Tournament at the Zephyrhills Lions Club. The event drew more than 100 competitors from area clubs, according to Bill Spivey, a local karate instructor. Guerra, making his debut as a black belt, was named Black Belt Grand Champion after winning the black belt sparring and forms divisions and placing second in the weapons category. Brunet, 13, was the Under-Black Belt Grand Champion after he won all three divisions he entered. The Dade City group took the team championship by edging Spring Hill, 105 points to 101.
