Persistence pays in the end, Miss America says

It took seven years and 11 pageants to capture the Miss America crown, 1990 titleholder Debbye Turner told a standing-room-only crowd Tuesday night at the University of South Florida. "I got tired of losing and decided to apply myself," Turner said. In 1989 she became the third African-American woman to hold the title. A veterinary student at the University of Missouri, she visited USF to encourage young people to believe in themselves. "It's so important to foster a sense of self-esteem (in children), so they realize they're far too important to be ravaged by drugs," she said. "My mother always taught that there were no limitations on our lives ... if I worked hard enough (anything) could come true."Corrections
