Police try to identify body mauled by alligators

Investigators are considering the possibility that the body of a girl, apparently mauled by alligators and found floating in a canal near Belle Glade, is that of a missing foster child, a newspaper reported today. The 9-year-old apparently ran away from her foster home in the Lake Breeze Trailer Park next to the canal a week ago, some residents told the Sun-Sentinel of Fort Lauderdale.

Another foster child also is missing from the park, but Palm Beach County sheriff's officials gave no further details about the juvenile.

A woman reported the body to police Monday after she saw an alligator nudging it across the canal.

A second alligator was also seen near the body.

Sheriff's investigators said they expect to identify the body after an autopsy today.
