School teacher to run for City Council seat

Carmen Sanchez, an elementary school teacher and local political activist, will challenge Eddie Caballero in the 1991 non-partisan City Council election. Sanchez, 50, said Tuesday that she plans to open her campaign account on May 11 and officially launch her campaign on May 30. Sanchez will attempt to wrest the District 6 council seat from Caballero, who has represented the heavily Latin and Hispanic West Tampa area since 1979.

She said Caballero "could do a better job than what he's doing."

"He has to be there for the people and he's not," she said. "I feel we need people who will give more of themselves to meet the needs of the people."

A fourth-grade teacher at Claywell Elementary School, Sanchez has volunteered on several local campaigns, including those of state Sen. Helen Gordon Davis, Hillsborough County Property Appraiser Ron Alderman and former state Sen. Pat Frank.

Sanchez is a member of the Hillsborough Democratic Executive Committee and the Hillsborough Political Caucus.
