South Florida avoided a three-game sweep by South Alabama with a 8-6 win Sunday in college baseball at Red McEwen Field. The Bulls (28-13, 3-6 in the Sun Belt Conference) dropped a doubleheader to the Jaguars (23-11, 6-3) on Saturday.
Mark Hubbard (5-2) pitched five innings for Sunday's victory before giving way to Winston Wheeler and then Bob Undorf, who recorded his 10th save of the year.
Trailing 7-1 in the sixth inning, South Alabama scored four runs on a walk, three singles and one South Florida error. The Jaguars added a run in the seventh to shave the USF lead to 7-6.
The Bulls added an insurance run in the eighth inning. Kevin Dattola reached first base on an error, stole second, then scored when Rodney Mayers doubled to right-centerfield. Dattola's stolen base tied the USF single-season record of 38 set by Greg Bullard in 1986.
Florida Southern 4, Tampa 1
LAKELAND _ Florida Southern got a complete-game four-hitter out of its starting pitcher for the second day in a row, and the Moccasins wrapped up a weekend sweep of the University of Tampa with a 4-1 victory Sunday.
The Spartans fell five games off Southern's pace in the Sunshine State Conference standings. With 14 conference games remaining, Tampa is 23-7 overall, 4-6 in the SSC. The Mocs are 30-3, 9-1.
Southern's Tom Drell (6-1) retired 18 of Tampa's final 21 batters while striking out eight and walking one Sunday.
Mike Simmons (5-2) went the distance for Tampa.
Eckerd 8, Rollins 6
ST. PETERSBURG _ Brian Balsanek's two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth lifted Eckerd College to an 8-6 win over Rollins on Sunday. The Tritons improved to 25-14 overall and 5-7 in the Sunshine State Conference; Rollins fell to 21-10, 6-6.
Louisiana St. 5, Florida 3
GAINESVILLE _ John O'Donoghue limited Florida to three hits over seven innings and first baseman Wes Grisham had three hits as Louisiana State beat Florida 5-3 Sunday afternoon at McKethan Stadium at Perry Field.
LSU, ranked No. 25, won the rubber game of the three-game series to improve to 27-10 overall and 7-5 in the Southeastern Conference. Florida dropped to 19-17 and 4-5.
Florida State 12, Tulane 11
TALLAHASSEE _ Fifth-ranked Florida State (34-7, 9-3) completed a three-game weekend sweep of Tulane (9-23, 3-11) in Metro Conference baseball, holding on for a 12-11 win Sunday before 3,924 spectators at Dick Howser Stadium.
